Trying something new

I made a big decision yesterday - I ordered a Kindle 2. For those of you who don't know what this is - well you obviously don't buy books at Amazon.com. This is probably a good thing also, as you likely don't spend as much money as I do at the aforementioned site.

Kindle is a book reader. It is an electronic device that displays text just like the pages of a book. You can download the "books" to the Kindle and read them within minutes of deciding what you want to read. They cost less than a paper book and you can store up to 1500 books on the Kindle at one time.

This is big for me because I am now and have always been in love with books. With the look of them, the feel of them and the smell of the paper. I like the sound the pages make when you ruffle them and just about every other thing about them too.

I used to buy hardcover books, so that I could keep them for years and years and read them over and over again. I liked the way they looked in all their sizes and colours on my book shelf. Then I started developing arthritis in my hands and found that hardcover books were just too darn heavy to hold comfortably to read. So, I switched to paperbacks. Now the problem with paperbacks is that they aren't as expensive as hardcover books, so I tend to buy more of them. I have book shelf upon book shelf in our house overflowing - literally - with paperbacks. My husband has to vie for space to house his books, of which there are also many.

So, ironically, I'm now finding that even paperbacks are sometimes too heavy for my tired, aching hands at the end of the day. Enter the Kindle. I'm going to give it a try. I'm a great lover of technology. I've got all the other latest gadgets - iPod, laptop, cell phone, etc, etc - so I think I might just be able to make the leap to an electronic book.

I'll keep you posted...
